Sunrise on Temple Mount in Jerusalem; Back to Previous Devotion

February 9 - Morning

"If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees of the field their fruit. Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land. I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no one will make you afraid. I will remove savage beasts from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country."

- Leviticus 26:3-6

The Blessings from the Lord for Obedience to the Covenant

The blessings and the curses found in Leviticus 26 are similar to other legal documents from this time period including some from 3000 BC up into the first millennium BC. (Examples: Ur-nammu, Lipit-Ishtar, Hammurabi, Babylonian boundary stones, Hittite treaties, Aramean treaties, Assyrian treaties) Chapter 26 is different from the contemporary treaties which contain prayers to a wide variety of gods to act in the realm of authority if the treaty is obeyed or disobeyed. In Leviticus there are no prayers, but promises given at face value from the One God who will act to bless or curse.

The blessings are divided into three general categories:

  1. Leviticus 26:4-5 - promise of rain and abundant harvest
  2. Leviticus 26:6-8 - promise of peace in the land
  3. Leviticus 26:9-13 - promise of God's favor and presence

The expectations of obedience to the covenant are summarized in Leviticus 26:1-3:

  1. Refrain from idol worship
  2. Keep the Sabbath
  3. Honor the Tabernacle
  4. and then, "Follow my decrees and ...obey my commands" in 26:4 captures the details and the application of the Lord's expectations listed in the covenant.
  Christian Quote from Church History

"The soul (mind) of a man in a church that does not teach the Word of God will be left to feed on a worthless form of spiritual nutrition."
- Galyn Wiemers

Something to Ponder??
“Traces of those signs and wonders are still preserved among those who regulate their lives by the teachings of the Gospel.” – Origen, 248 AD

Hebrew and Greek Word Study   Facts and Information
'Ebed (Hb) – Servant (Eng) – 'ebed is the Hebrew word that means "servant" or "slave." This word originates from the verb 'abad which means "to work" and "to serve."

According to 2 Kings 25:1-17, Nebuchadnezzar and his Babylonian army attacked Jerusalem in 588 and after a 2 year siege they burnt Jerusalem in 586 BC. Excavation in the Jewish Quarter in the 1970’s revealed a 22 foot high watchtower with walls 12 feet thick. At the base of this tower was a thick layer of charred wood, ashes and soot from the fires set by the Babylonians. Also found were a Babylonian style bronze arrowhead and 4 iron arrowheads of Israel used in this fateful clash.

Confession to Action   Facts and Information
Do I trust God's provisions for my needs such as finances, friendship, health, ministry, safety?
I will seek the Lord's ways and his wisdom, and I will trust the Lord will provide for me and
for those who I offer prayers of intercession.
"She (wisdom) has sent out her maids, and she calls from the highest point of the city, 'Let all who are simple
come in here!'

she says to those who
lack judgment."
- Proverbs 9:3-4
