Sunrise on Temple Mount in Jerusalem; Back to Previous Devotion

November 18 - Morning

"As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who
is now at work in those who are disobedient.
 All of us also
lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like
the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.
 But because
of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
 made
us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
"

- Ephesians 2:1-5

The Great Rescue

If we remember it or not, our condition before we placed faith in Christ was an eternal darkness of fatal hopelessness. Paul describes each of us without Jesus like this:

    • dead in transgressions
    • existing in sin
    • following the ways of a fallen world
    • following the ways of a powerful rebel spirit
    • being used by the ruling rebel spirit as a pawn
    • gratifying sinful cravings that took us deeper into darkness
    • following desires of our sin nature
    • following the thoughts/logic of our dark sin nature
    • objects of God's wrath in time and in eternal judgment

"As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also
lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath."
- Ephesians
2:1-3

But, God's nature is love and he offers mercy. This eternal character of God was manifest in Jesus Christ when he came as a man to pay the awful price for our sin and rebellion that had placed us in the path of God's wrath. Jesus suffered and died to remove the eternal darkness and rescue us from the fatal hopelessness. This can only happen because of grace. God's love moved Jesus to pay our penalty in order that he could have mercy on us. In his grace God removed us from our hopeless state to be placed in a position of eternal life and favor with the Almighty God.

  Christian Quote from Church History

"The spiritual man is the mature man who can discern all things with a mind renewed with a standard of evaluation that comes from
knowing God's Word."

Something to Ponder??

93% of Americans have a Bible in their home, but only 54% have read it more
than once a month.

Hebrew and Greek Word Study   Facts and Information

Tob (Hb) - Good (Eng) - the Hebrew word tob is means "good things," "welfare," "benefits."
Tob is used seven times in Genesis 1 where it is translated "good."
In Exodus 33:19 God himself is tob.

  A clay seal, called a bulla, from 735-715 BC that says,"Belonging to Ahaz son of Jehotam, King of Judah" has been found. There are fingerprints embedded in the hardened clay, possibly those of Ahaz himself when he sealed the document. (Ahaz is referred to in 2 Chr.28;
2 Kings 16; Isaiah 7:10)

Confession to Action   Facts and Information
Do I remember the hopelessness of life without Christ?
Do I understand the wrath and judgment of God that I have been rescued from?
I will remember the mercy of God and thank him for his great love that was
shown to me when the work of Jesus rescued me!
"The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
Proverbs 18:21

Nehemiah's Wall in Jerusalem 445 BC
The gate and court at Dan. Notice the stepped platform where the king would be seated to judge the city. The circlular blocks at the four corners of the stepped platform would have supported wooden pillars that held a covering over the king.
