Sunrise on Temple Mount in Jerusalem; Back to Previous Devotion

June 21 - Morning

"How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.

I seek you with all my heart;
do not let me stray from your commands.
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.

Praise be to you, Lord;
teach me your decrees."

- Psalms 119:9-12

Avoid Sin by Hearing and Understanding the Truth

The letter beth that heads this portion (verses 9-16) of Psalm 119 is a symbol for a house or a tent, and means “house”. It represents being in God’s will by creating the image of a home with a wife and kids, or of the house of God, which is the Temple. In other words, we find the Word and we live there. We hear (“I have hidden”), understand (“teach me”) and continue in God’s Word (“I rejoice…I meditate…I delight”).

The conflict of verses 9-16 is the writer’s desire to avoid sin – to not stray, but remain pure (Ps. 119:9-11). The solution is fivefold:

  • Hear – or, take in – the Word of God (“hidden your word in my heart” – Ps. 119:11)
  • Understand the Word of God that was taught (“teach me your decrees” – Ps. 119:12)
  • Speak the Word of God that is understood (“with my lips I recount all the laws” – Ps. 119:13)
  • Follow and do the Word of God (“I rejoice in following your statutes” – Ps. 119:14)
  • Continue in the Word of God that you already know (“I meditate on your precepts” – Ps. 119:15)
  Christian Quote from Church History
"The Bible is the story of two gardens: Eden and Gethsemane. In the first, Adam took a fall. In the second, Jesus took a stand. In the first, God sought Adam. In the second, Jesus sought God. In Eden, Adam hid from God. In Gethsemane, Jesus emerged from the tomb. In Eden, Satan led Adam to a tree that led to his death. From Gethsemane, Jesus went to a tree that led to our life."

Hebrew and Greek Word Study   Facts and Information

Hesed (Hb) - Kindness (Eng) - The Hebrew word hesed occurs 245x in the OT.
The English translation of the Hebrew word hesed with the word “kindness” is insufficient.
Also, “grace” and “favor” are incomplete. In an attempt to capture a more complete and accurate description hesed has been described as “good will that becomes good deeds.”

We have eleven sources that quote or refer to the book of Mark before 200 AD and twelve that use Luke. These early Christian writers include:

    • Clement of Rome around 95 AD
    • Polycarp as early as 110 AD
    • Irenaeus by 150 A
    • Justin Martyr by 150 AD
    • Pseudo-Barnabas around 100 AD
