Sunrise on Temple Mount in Jerusalem; Back to Previous Devotion

May 4 - Morning

"In the eighteenth year of his reign, King Josiah sent the secretary, Shaphan…to the temple of the Lord.
He said:

‘Go up to Hilkiah the high priest and have him get ready the money that has been brought into the
temple of the Lord…Have them entrust it to the
men appointed to supervise the work on the temple. And have these men pay the workers
who repair the temple of the Lord…’

Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the secretary,

‘I have found the Book of the Law
in the temple of the Lord.’

He gave it to Shaphan, who read it. Then Shaphan the secretary went to the king and reported to him:

‘Your officials have paid out the money that was
in the temple of the Lord and have entrusted it to the workers and supervisors at the temple…Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.’

And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king."

- Second Kings 22:3-10

The Book of the Law is Found

Josiah becomes king in 640 BC at the age of eight. When he was sixteen years old (632 BC) he began to seek the Lord and then when he was twenty years old (628 BC) he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of high places and Asherah poles. When Josiah was twenty-six (622 BC) he sent a team of men to repair the temple. While working in the temple the Book of the Law, or the writings of Moses, was discovered. After having read the covenant Israel had with the Lord Josiah, along with Jeremiah and others, realized they had failed for years to be obedient and they feared judgment was coming. Josiah and the prophets stepped up their attempts to bring revival to the land. With this the final days of Judah begin.

“Belief in God includes belief in this supernatural powers.” – C.S. Lewis

Something to Ponder??

Jews taken captive in 605, 591 and 586 BC had to walk 1,000 miles to Babylon (Iraq).

Hebrew and Greek Word Study   Facts and Information

Naqam (Hb) – Avenge (Eng) – the Hebrew word naqam means “to take vengeance” and “to avenge.” Naqam can also refer to the one taking the vengeance. The Lord reserves vengeance for himself in Deuteronomy 32:35, 43, but the Lord does use men to take his naqam in Numbers 31:2-3. The prophet's spoke of the Lord’s naqam on his enemies in Isaiah 34:8; 59:7; Micah 5:15; Nahum 1:2.

The Persian city of Susa is mentioned in Daniel 8:2; Esther 1:1-2; 2:3; 8:15; Nehemiah 1:1. Susa (or Shushan) was 200 miles east of Babylon and the winter capital of the Persian kings. The excavated ruins cover about 4900 acres and will probably never be completely excavated. The citadel of Susa, or the palace, mentioned in Daniel and Esther has been excavated. This citadel covers 123 acres itself and is raised high above the city.  The throne room covered an acre and had six rows with six columns each topped with capitals with carved bulls. The book of Esther describes the floor of this room as being “mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl and other costly stones.” (Esther 1:6, NIV) Or, “pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.” (Esther 1:6, KJ) This pavement and these colors have been found in this very room described in the book of Esther. (Here, here, here, here and here. See these colors in a wall mosaic here, here , here, here, and here.)

Confession to Action   Facts and Information
How hard is it to follow the Lord without his written word?
If we do not have the God's documented revelation of himself, how do we know who God is?
I will not neglect to read, study, understand and apply the Word of God as it is found in the Bible.
  "Listen, my son,
accept what I say,
    and the years of your
life will be many."
