Sunrise on Temple Mount in Jerusalem; Back to Previous Devotion

March 1 - Morning

“The officers shall say to the army: “Has anyone built a new house and not yet begun to live in it? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else may begin to live in it. Has anyone planted a vineyard and not begun to enjoy it? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else enjoy it. Has anyone become pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else marry her.” Then the officers shall add, “Is anyone afraid or fainthearted? Let him go home so that his fellow soldiers will not become disheartened too.”

- Deuteronomy 20:5-8

Be Focused and Fearless, or Go Home

Compulsory military service of males twenty years of age and above was balanced with respect for other responsibilities and concern for their fearful attitudes. Israel did not need soldiers who were distracted or afraid. Since the Lord would win the battle, Israel only needed the focused and the fearless!

Remember Gideon does the same thing when he first sends the fearful home to reduce his army from 32,000 to 10,000. (Judges 7:2-3) Next the Lord separated those who were focused on their own concerns (drinking water on their hands and knees with their faces down) from those who were focused on the military engagement (lifting the water to their mouth while they were still looking up and aware of their surroundings.) (Judges 7:4-8) This left a mere 300 fearless and focused men.

Distraction and fear can spread from one person to a group. Likewise, a sense of mission and great faith is also contagious. The Israeli officers were to accept only the focused and the fearless.

  Christian Quote from Church History

“Knowledge of scripture is knowledge of Christ and ignorance of them
is ignorance of him.”

– Jerome 400 AD

Hebrew and Greek Word Study   Facts and Information

Shaw’ (Hb) – Deceit (Eng) – shaw' is the Hebrew word that means “deceit,” “deception,” “malice,” “emptiness” and “vanity.” In Exodus 23:1, Psalm 31:6 and Job 15:31 shaw’ is a used as a legal term.

No other cosmogony (theory of creation) goes beyond what currently exists back to the First Cause. All other cosmogonies begin with space, matter and time already in existence.
None can answer the question, “Where did this all come from?”
The Bible gives a reasonable explanation: This vast and complex physical universe came from an
eternal, omnipotent and personal God

Confession to Action   Facts and Information
Do I repent when God's truth corrects me?
Do I daily confess my sins?
I will humble myself before God's truth and confess my sins today.
  "Repent at my rebuke!
Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
I will make known to you my teachings."
- Proverbs 1:23
