Sunrise on Temple Mount in Jerusalem; Back to Previous Devotion

June 23 - Evening

" 'They have greatly oppressed me from my youth,
let Israel say;
'they have greatly oppressed me from my youth,
but they have not gained the victory over me.
Plowmen have plowed my back
and made their furrows long.
But the Lord is righteous;
he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked.'

May all who hate Zion
be turned back in shame."

- Psalms 129:1-5

They Have Greatly Oppressed Me, But They Did Not Get The Victory!

This psalm of ascent (Psalm 129) begins with the leader of the Levitical choral calling Israel to recite,

“They have greatly oppressed me from my youth!”

The pilgrims progressing into and through the temple courts would respond with the same chorus line, but add the victorious line of lyrics:

“yet they did not gain victory over me!"

Israel’s captors and oppressors are said to have cut the backs of Israelites like ploughmen cut a field with long furrows. But, the righteous god has cut them free.

God’s powerful demonstrations of historically delivering, restoring and establishing Israel is an undeniable testimony to his greatness and his plan. Or, these historical occurrences that continue into our time are, at least, troublesome events that the skeptic must repeatedly deny through 3,500 years of history.

  Christian Quote from Church History
"I've read the last page of the Bible, it's all going to turn
out all right."

- Billy Graham
Something to Ponder??
"There's a lovely Hasidic story of a rabbi who always told his people that if they studied the Torah, it would put Scripture on their hearts. One of them asked, "Why on our hearts, and not in them?" The rabbi answered, "Only God can put Scripture inside. But reading sacred text can put it on your heart, and then when your hearts break, the holy words will fall inside."

Hebrew and Greek Word Study   Facts and Information

Enecho (Gr) – to hold a grudge (Eng) – the Greek word enecho can mean:

  • To hold a grudge
  • To be unhappy
  • To be irritated
  • To be resentful
  • To be liable to prosecution
  • To be subject

Enecho is used in Mark 6:19 when Herodias was intent on having John the Baptist executed.
Enecho is also used in Luke 11:53 where it says the scribes and
Pharisees began to be enechein (enecho) towards Jesus.

Discovered in the rubble of a construction project taking place on the Temple Mount was a charred stamp-seal with a partial Hebrew inscription that reads:
Belonging to
Galiyahu son of Immer

The priestly family of Immer is mentioned in:
Jeremiah 20:1
Ezra 2:37
Ezra 2:59
Ezra 10:20
Nehemiah 3:29
Nehemiah 7:61, 40
Nehemiah 11:13
