Masseboth, is Hebrew for “standing stones”.
This Masseboth was in the temple area of the upper citadel.
There were thirty unworked (uncut) stones found at this cultic site.
Some of the stones were basalt, others were chalkstone.
The stones were arranged in pairs – one larger, one smaller.
This seems to represent the worshipper (smaller stone) facing and standing in the presence of their god (larger stone).
On the east side of each was a flat stone where an offering could be placed.
The offering could have been an animal indicated by the thousands of scattered animal bones in this area.
The animal bones found here
included sheep, goats, pigs, deer, dogs, fish and one lion bone.
Also found as a potential offering here were metal figurines (one silver) and an arrowhead. |
