Shaaraim means "Two Gates".

The biblical city of Shaaraim is the Khirbet Qeiyafa where excavation work has uncovered a wall encircling the city with two gates.

The city dates to the time of David in the Iron Age.

Shaaraim, or Khirbet Qeiyafa, appears to be a fortress city used by David on the frontier where Judah shared a border with the Philistines in the Elah Valley.

The city came to a sudden end around 925 BC.

In the Bible:
Joshua 15:33-36 - "In the western foothills: Eshtaol Zorah. . . Sokoh, Azekah, Shaaraim, Adithaim and Gederah (or Gederothaim) —fourteen towns and their villages."

1 Samuel 17:52 - "Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath and to the gates of Ekron. Their dead were strewn along the Shaaraim road to Gath and Ekron.

1 Chronicles 4:27-31 - "Shimei had sixteen sons and six daughters, but his brothers did not have many children; so their entire clan did not become as numerous as the people of Judah. 28 They lived in Beersheba . . . Beth Markaboth, Hazar Susim, Beth Biri and Shaaraim. These were their towns until the reign of David.
