North Side Wall:
New Gate, Damascus Gate, Herod Gate
The North wall built on the bedrock. This is the same location as the wall in Jesus time.
There are three gates along the north wall of the Old City of Jerusalem:
1) New Gate
2) Damascus Gate
3) Herod's Gate
Running along the North Wall of the
Old City Jerusalem.

The Damascus gate on the north wall on the north side of the Old City.

Notice:

a) the two slits on either side of the open window. These were wider on the inside of the wall but became narrow on the outside. They where designed for protection and shooting arrows at the enemy.

b) The structures or balconies at the top of the wall. These had openings in their floors for pouring boiling oil down on the attacking soldiers at the base of the wall.

This is the view of a window from the inside of the wall. There is much more room for moving and a wider range of aim.

This window is in the eastern wall of the city. I am standing on the temple mound inside the city. The Mount of Olives can be seen over the wall.

An place for dumping boiling oil on the corner of the Damascus gate.

A close up shows where the oil would be poured from and the windows for archery.

Below the Damascus gate (built in 1540) is an archway from the first century. This archway is from the time of Jesus and the second temple.

The North wall is on the right and we are looking east. The hill in the background is the Mount of Olives. We are going to continue a descent towards the Kidron Valley.
This is the modern street and businesses across the street from the wall on the north side of the Old City of Jerusalem.

Stonework from1540 in the north wall.

Notice the arches window in the top right corner of this picture.

Continuing along the north wall towards the east the next gate seen here is Herod Gate (also called the Flower Gate because of the carved flower in the stone above the gate.)
This is the Herod Gate. There is a flower carved above.
