Saved in a Moment; Holiness Pursued for Life

Matthew 28:1-10 The Resurrection

Matthew 28:16-20 – The Great Commission includes Obedience after faith in the gospel.

Comparisons:

  • There is a difference between getting a uniform for a team and getting playing time for that team.
  • Anyone can buy a guitar or a trumpet but learning to play it is an entirely different thing.
  • You can put a hot tub on your deck but can you keep it clean and running properly?
  • It is possible to set up an aquarium with fish in it but is it possible for you to still be able to see the fish in that water in six months?
  • Falling in Love is easy, staying in love with your spouse is the challenge.
  • Getting married can be done in one day, but staying married takes a lifetime.
  • Having kids and raising kids is two different things.
  • Believing in Jesus just takes a moment, but living for him is where we need to improve.

It took God one night to remove the Hebrews from Egypt but more than 40 years to get Egypt out of the Hebrews.

Hebrews 10:14

  • “made perfect” is in the perfect tense and means a settled state, a continuous condition
  • are being made holy” is in the present tense and means something done over and over continuously.

It is not impressive for someone to believe in Jesus for salvation but it is something to see a person who has believed in Jesus living like Christ and living out the truth of the Word of God.

First Corinthians 10:1-10 – These things happened as examples for us.  Israel baptized into God’s plan, ate spiritual food (manna) and drank spiritual drink (water from rock) but did not please God.  They were scattered like debris from a hurricane.  They lived a pointless, meaningless life and died randomly without any purpose even though they were set free from Egypt, had entered God’s plan and received the Lord’s food and drink.  Instead of embracing God’s Law and ways they:

  1. indulged in worldly religion and sinful lifestyle
  2. engaged in sexual immorality and did not control their passions and lusts
  3. tested the Lord by twisting his word and creating their own doctrines which resulted in snakes biting and killing them.  The snakes represent doctrines of demons, like Satan in the garden, that twist the word of God to the destruction of those who hear it
  4. grumbled and were destroyed by the same angel of death that struck Egypt

Romans 6:4 – “Just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the father, we too may live a new life.”

Our challenge is not only to believe in Jesus but to live in the present in our new life.
