Sunrise on Temple Mount in Jerusalem; Back to Previous Devotion

February 25 - Evening

"The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath he swore to your ancestors that he brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt."

- Deuteronomy 7:7-8

As Great as the Promise

Israel is told that God did not select them because of their greatness, but because of the Lord’s faithfulness to his oath. The Lord had promised Abraham that he would become a great nation. The reason for all these amazing events leading up to the fantastic fulfillment of receiving the Promised Land was because the Lord took an oath to do this very thing.

The power of Israel was the mighty Lord God, but the source of his performance was his Word. The Lord had spoken; the Lord had made a promise; the Lord had taken an oath. Now, that Word was moving in history. The deliverance of Israel from Egypt was just like the creation of the universe. God spoke and the universe came into existence. Likewise, God had spoken to Abraham, and that promise had multiplied into a large nation ready to conquer the land promised to Abraham.

Israel’s opportunities come from the Word of God and the promises he has made. Their power comes from the Lord who’s Word has been spoken.

Chloros (Gr) – Green (Eng) - chloros is a Greek word that means “green” and “pale green.” It is the color of young grass. Chloros is related to the Greek name Chloe which means “tender foliage.”
The horse named “Death” in Revelation 6:8 was the color of chloros.

The theater in Ephesus was the site of the riot instigated by the silversmiths who crafted images of Artemis (Acts 19:23). This theater has been excavated. It was a very impressive structure that seated 24,000 on 3 levels with 22 rows on each level. It had been built in the 200-300’s BC, but was expanded during Paul’s day. An inscription of Greek and Latin found in the theater states that a Roman official provided a silver image of Artemis to be set out on display in the theater during civic meetings in the theater.

Do I know God? Do I know God's Word?
I will know God's Word in order to know his ways, his character, his adversaries and his plans.
  "Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence,
    and do not claim a place among his great men;
it is better for him to say to you, 'Come up here,'
    than for him to humiliate you before his nobles."
- Proverbs 25:6-7

Bullet damage from the fight between Arabs and Israeli forces for the Jewish Quarter during the war in 1948 can still be seen in the Zion Gate. The Zion Gate and the Jaffa Gate were closed from 1948 to 1967 when the Jordanians (Arabs) maintained control of the Old City. They closed the gates because they faced West Jerusalem, which was controlled by Israel.
